Wow factor for the beginning of Victorians

To start our topic of Victorians, we were given a task by Queen Victoria...

We used a recipe sheet to find out how much our ingredients would cost us if we bought them from ‘Mrs Waterworth’s shop’.
In groups, we had to calculate how much flour (10g = 2p), Sugar (10g = 5p) and Butter (10g = 10p) would cost us, if we used 50g of each. We then came to the shop to weigh out the ingredients that we needed to buy.

We worked together in teams to take turns to mix the ingredients together. We used our mixture to make ourselves our own cupcakes. Whilst they were baking, we filled out a measurement sheet to show we could read and label scales.

The cakes were baked and then after lunch, we weighed and mixed butter and icing sugar to make buttercream. We added toppings of buttercream, jam and strawberries to our Victoria Sponges.

After we had completed our baking mission from Queen Victoria, we enjoyed eating our cakes with a drink of English tea - Just like Queen Victoria would have done.
