Homework Expectations
Daily Reading and Times Table Practice
We encourage children in Year 5 to read at home every night and practise their times tables on the Times Table Rock Stars website. Their reading may be books (fiction and non-fiction) and/ or newspapers. We ask that adults at home ask questions about their child’s reading to check understanding. For example: check that they understand the meaning of words and talk about the effect some words have on the reader; ask them why certain punctuation is being used; ask them to summarise the story or to discuss the characters in the book and why they like them or dislike them; or talk about the type of text it is and compare to other stories.
Half-termly Spellings
Spelling will be taught by focusing on a different spelling rule each week in school and will be practised in class after looking at patterns and changes to the meaning of words. Each half term, a list of common exception words will be set on the website to practise at home.
Optional Topic-Based Homework
Each half term, children will be set an optional 'Home Learning' grid with a range of creative activities to undertake throughout the term based on a topic from class.
