Love, Learn and Grow

British Science Week 2022

This year's British Science Week's theme was 'Growth'.  We decided to link this to climate change and worked on the theme 'Growing a Greener Planet'.

Eco Club launched Science Week with an assembly. They introduced 'The Great Big School Clean' to the children, encouraging them to collect litter to prevent it from harming animals. They made and put posters around school. They also sorted through rubbish collected and recycled what they could.

Reception

Reception had lots of fun learning about what plants need to grow and planted their own herbs and veg.  They also enjoyed a visit from Ged Collins (STEM ambassador).

Year 1

Year 1 learned about tree habitats with Ged Collins (STEM ambassador), made their own composter in Forest School and were super scientists investigating suitable materials for the little pigs' house.

Year 2

Year 2 investigated hand spans and the growth of these.  We adopted a tree with Ged Collins (STEM ambassador), learned about seed dispersal and even recycled the litter we had collected to make our own litter bugs.

What a busy week!

We also planted Sugar Snap Peas for our Forest School veg plot.

Year 3 learned about the importance of bees for the environment and made bee hotels to try and protect them from decline. They had great fun during their visit from Ged Collins (tree specialist).

Year 4

Year 4 had a busy week planning habitats to create at Burrs to protect animals.  We also took part in the Great Big School Clean litter pick whilst we were there. We were super scientists investigating 'States of Matter' and we even had a virtual trip around the moon!

In Forest School, we planted broad beans in the new Eco Brick bedding box we made in collaboration with Eco Council at St Gabriel's.

Year 5

Year 5 enjoyed litter picking at the Burrs during Science Week.

Year 6

Year 6 learned about pollination and the decline of bees and made wildflower seed balls to spread at Burrs Country Park during our litter pick supporting The Great Big School Clean. We also had lots of fun exploring 'Light and Shadows'.

Eco Club

Eco Club worked in collaboration with St Gabriel's Eco Council to make a raised bed for planting out of Eco Bricks. They planted broad beans and also planted sunflowers for people in Ukraine.

Earth Hour Switch Off

We finished Science Week with our own whole school ‘Earth Hour Switch Off’. We turned off all lights and electrical equipment to work towards saving our planet. Reception had a Collective Worship, thanking God for our wonderful world.🌍
